🏥 NHS Annual Allowance Calculator

🧮 Quick PIA Calculator — What is my Pension Input Amount?
Your pension input is not the contributions you pay — it is calculated from the growth in your pension's value over the year. Many NHS staff have pension in more than one scheme section — calculate each separately and add them together. Find your figures on your Annual Benefit Statement at totalrewardstatements.nhs.uk
2015 CARE Scheme (most members): Accrual rate 1/54th. PIA = Closing value − (Opening value × CPI revaluation factor), where Opening value = (Previous pay ÷ 54) × 16 and Closing value = (This year's pay ÷ 54) × 16. A pay rise matching CPI exactly produces a zero PIA.
1995 Section (NPA 60, 1/80th accrual): PIA = increase in capital value over the year. Capital value = projected pension × 20, plus any lump sum. Opening capital value is revalued by CPI. Enter the capital values from your Annual Benefit Statement — do not enter pensionable pay.
2008 Section (NPA 65, 1/60th accrual): PIA = increase in capital value over the year. Capital value = projected pension × 10. Opening capital value is revalued by CPI. Enter the capital values from your Annual Benefit Statement — do not enter pensionable pay.
From your Annual Benefit Statement — "Opening pensionable pay" (2015) or "Opening capital value" (1995/2008)

From your Annual Benefit Statement — "Closing pensionable pay" (2015) or "Closing capital value" (1995/2008)

Enter figures above
Formula: PIA = Closing value − (Opening value × CPI revaluation factor) | Where Opening = (Prev pay ÷ 54) × 16 | Closing = (This pay ÷ 54) × 16 | Revaluation = 1 + (CPI ÷ 100)
💡 Have pension in more than one scheme? Calculate the PIA for each section separately using the tabs above, then add the results together — your total PIA is the sum of all sections. Enter the combined total in the full calculator below.
⚠️ McCloud Remedy — we cannot help with this. If you were in the NHS Pension Scheme between 1 April 2015 and 31 March 2022 and were within 10 years of your Normal Pension Age on 1 April 2012, you may be affected by the McCloud remedy (also known as the "transitional protection" remedy). This can significantly affect your PIA calculations for those years and may mean you have a different Annual Allowance position than this calculator shows.
If you may be affected by McCloud, do not rely on this calculator. You must contact the NHS Pensions Agency directly at nhsbsa.nhs.uk/nhs-pensions or speak to a specialist NHS pension adviser. The remedy is complex and individual — general calculators cannot accurately account for it.
